The Retreat - a 62-suite spa hotel - sits in a private extension of the lagoon, its interconnected pools cascading and meandering through lava canyons. Their milky turquoise water snakes around the building like a protective moat, steam rising eerily. The interiors, by Icelandic architects and Italian designers, are all monochrome.

Our insider Stymir prefers visiting the Blue Lagoon in December. If you're here in December you can experience the place in both daylight, and darkness. He recommends arriving around 1pm to get the best of both worlds. Usually, it's open till 11pm or later, but allways check your tickets and plan ahead.
